During both of my visits to Morocco I had the opportunity to travel with experienced Berber tour guides. The Berbers are a marginalized group in Morocco.  My lead tour guide Ahmed was very deliberate about the group asking deep questions about culture both amongst ourselves and with the other guides. He wanted us to get a true look into not only what it means to be Moroccan, and a member of a mostly Muslim society, but also what it means to be a member of the Berber community. Morocco was the first

country I visited where I experienced culture shock and having the time to have a human connection with Ahmed during my first visit really reshaped the way I looked at the country and the culture. We traveled out into the Sahara desert and camp for one night and under the stars we listened to traditional Berber music and exchanged questions about our own cultures and Moroccan & Berber cultures.
