Knowing how prominent hair is in the black community I decided that when our ship landed in Senegal my first task would to be getting my hair twisted into Senegalese twists. After asking a stranger on the street where the nearest hair salon was she contacted her daughter to serve as a guide for us for the rest of the day. She sat with us while we got her hair done translated between us and our beauticians and ate with us when our beauticians offered us a meal during their break. This encounter made me consider what community means and who is considered community both at home and in Senegal. At home I would not expect someone doing a service for me to invite me to have lunch with them. However, in that hair salon 5-8 of us gathered around a giant bowl in the center of the room and shared this meal. This was a demonstration of a group driven society which tends contrast the US's individualistic views.
